What to Pack
Clothing: North Carolina is beautiful in October! Last year was an average of 65 degrees during the daytime. It does get chilly in the morning and at night time, so make sure to layer as events at High Point can go late! Take sure to wear comfortable light clothing that showcases your style and personality but FORGO THE HEELS – at least during the day. You will be on your feet, walking all day long and wearing heels is the biggest rookie mistake for these trade shows. However, there are so many designer parties during the evenings at market, or you may get invited to a nice dinner right after the show. So, bring at least one nice pair of shoes in case, which you could keep in your bag or car during the day.
Carrying With You: Many designers decide to bring a large bag, or small rolling bag/suitcase instead of a purse. Not only will you want to bring with you your own business materials but throughout market you will be gathering catalogs and other items from the vendors. Inside your bag make sure to bring:
- A large stack of business cards
- Copy of your business licenses
- Address labels including email, to ensure your info is correct on order forms as well as to save time
- Credit references: vendors will require if you request terms for your initial order
- Shopping list including budget with dollars divided by product category
- Purchase record: so you have a reference what will arrive at your store, and when
- Credit card stickers: save time and secure special offers i.e. free shipping, discounts, dating”
- Miscellaneous
- Make storage space on your phone for photos
- Extra battery for your phone
- Advil, band aids
- Snacks — Most showrooms will be offering complimentary food and drinks throughout the day so take advantage of that!
Successful designers are not creating their success sitting and waiting for business. They are getting out, networking, learning, and thriving through interaction with industry peers, taste-makers, and like minded professionals. This is also a great opportunity to not only network at fun social parties, but attend education events as well. Learn from industry expects and earn continued education units if you need them.
HPMKT App
The High Point Market Authority has updated and enhanced its My Market app for this upcoming fall market. Using GPS technology for building-to-building blue dot navigation, users can map a route from their current location to specific exhibitors’ showroom. Additionally, the app features indoor mapping technology within 6 popular buildings, guiding users step-by-step and floor-by-floor to their selected showroom.
Beyond mapping, the app also allows users to review the event calendar and search exhibitors by applying various filters, including category, style, price point, options, building and country. Now updated with fall market data, both exhibitors and events can be added to a personalized plan by creating a My Market account, which is also accessible through the High Point Market website.
